When it comes to Laser Hair Removal there is more to know and consider than just price and the type of laser machine being used. For the purpose of this article we will be discussing timing, this means the right and wrong time to have laser hair removal treatments. This will in turn answer the question of why being dedicated to your treatment plan is a must in order to produce optimum results.

Hair Growth Cycles

The cycle of hair growth plays a major role in your laser hair removal treatment regimen. Excessive hair growth (Hirsutism) can be the result of a variety of things, heredity, stress, medication, and hormonal changes. For women puberty, pregnancy and menopause play an important part in determining hair growth patterns. Studies have shown that there can be as many as 2500 hair follicles per square inch but less than 100 hairs will be showing at any given time. For these reasons, during laser hair removal treatment, it is extremely difficult for anyone to predict, the exact length of time before there is minimal to no growth in the area being treated...

Each hair on your body has its own three phase life cycle, Anagen (active growth), Catagen (cessation or ceasing) and Telogen (rest). At the end of the cycle the hair falls out and begins growing all over again from the same follicle unless proper laser hair removal intervention takes place.

When is the best time for this intervention? Well I'm glad you asked. The phase that actually matters most when it comes to laser hair removal is the anagen phase. It is only during this phase that a follicle can be disabled by laser hair removal. This phase may only last for a couple of weeks though it can last for a few months this depends on the above mentioned factors as well as the part of your body in question, the hair colour, the skin type, your age, and most importantly your genes. This is why laser hair removal results vary from person to person. Let’s discuss these phases in more detail

The "perfect" stage for laser hair removal treatment. The hair is grown is visible above the skin’s surface and can be treated. There is plenty of water and salt available in the follicle for thermolysis (destruction of the follicle using heat). The hair shaft is attached to the papilla, thus enabling the laser hair removal to attack the melanin in the shaft destroying the tiny blood vessels and nerves that supply nourishment and stimulus to the hair follicle. With consistent continues treatment the follicle loses the ability to grow a hair and disables the papilla. This period for facial and body hair can be as long as two to three weeks.

The "perfect" stage for laser hair removal treatment has passed. The growth process has reversed itself and the hair is getting ready to shed (this is not the same shedding process as post laser hair removal treatment). The moisture, water and salt have begun to dry up. Follicle destruction by thermolysis is almost impossible. This stage is remarkably variable and can be as little as two days.

This is the "resting" stage. The hair is neither developing nor growing. Laser hair removal is not an option during this phase as the hair is usually not visible above the skin and has detached from the papilla.

Now that your familiar with the hair growth cycle you can understand why laser hair removal is not a one stop deal it is a progressively permanent procedure and it is necessary to repeat treatments at the recommended intervals in order to catch each hair in the anagen phase, which remember is the only time laser hair removal is effective.

To review, there are three stages of hair growth – Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. The "perfect" time for hair to be permanently destroyed is when it is in the Anagen or growing stage. It can take 6 to 12 weeks for a hair to grow from the papilla, to the surface of the skin. Therefore, if you tweeze a hair today, it is generally impossible for you to see the exact same hair in a week

When considering laser hair removal it is important to approach your treatments with realistic expectations. If you’re serious about results then your commitment is a must. In turn we promise that your laser hair removal therapist will be just as dedicated and eager to help you achieve your goal of permanent hair reduction and in the end the results will speak for themselves.
Laser hair removal treatments are scheduled at 6 week intervals and will be adjusted according to your individual results and circumstances with the constant goal of catching hair growth in the anagen phase. View our laser hair removal Merrylands prices below.
